Snow measurements
Snow measurements
Snow measurements with a radar sounder. The return pulse is analyzed to identify air-snow interface and snow ground interface as well as information about internal snow and ice structure
To forecast the danger of flooding or to estimate the amount of snow water equivalent in a catchment for hydropower production it is important to know the snow distribution in the catchment. By using a radar sounder with a relatively small footprint in the C to X band region one can estimate snow depth with a few centimeter accuracy. By looking at the brightness of the backscatter one can also obtain information about ice layers and layers of different snow properties. Snow surface skin temperature could be measured by IR thermometers and thereby also have indications on snow wetness which is important for estimating discharge rates
- More efficient and less expensive than ground based measurements
- More accurate than satellite based measurements
- Flight track can be optimized to achieve representative data for the area
- Information on reservoir filling levels can be obtained as well
