Scientists have a lot of different interests and scientific pursuits. Common to most are tight budgets. An operational UAS platform opens up a well of new possibilities as the costs are considerably less than for manned aircraft. And one avoids the time and cost of having to go through a whole new certification when a new instrument is added to the aircraft or other modifications to the airframe becomes necessary.
